Doja is a new wave craft gin that combines the legacy of two cultures in one sip. I can say that line by heart after having shot this video for the gin brand Doja. I spent many hours editing and re-editing the video to meet their creative direction. And watching it over and over again to make little tweaks. In the end it was definitely worth it and I’m proud of the work that we made together. Takuma, the owner and head bartender of Martiny’s really made the video work. Having good talent really makes or breaks a shoot and Takuma was perfect for the shoot. A seasoned expert bartender makes complex tasks seem effortless. Preparing a complex drink and making to perfection while a camera is rolling is no small feat and he did it perfectly.

For this video shoot I made a game plan to keep it simple. The client sent me a sample video that they wanted to use as inspiration. I created a shot list from that so that we could check off each shot as they were completed. I tried to keep the setup relatively simple. A main soft light to illuminate Takuma. A back light with a soft gel and the ambient light in the room for fill. We had two cameras for the shoot. One on a slider and the second on a fluid head. During the shoot we had Takuma make two cocktails and I had him prepare each twice. Two cameras rolling for each shot gave me a total of four different clips to choose from when editing the footage. With a shoot like this putting a small amount of effort into planning it out makes a huge difference when it comes time to shoot the video and than edit it. The client requested a couple rounds of edits but they mostly had to do with how best to feature their branding. I was really thrilled when they were happy with the results and used it to advertise their business.

And after we were done with the shoot I decided to play around with the bottle to create some additional content for them and work for my portfolio. I try to use dramatic lighting. Bold textures and subtle effects to make the little bite sized videos pop and get attention.
